2006 → 2016 → 2025. A song that waited almost twenty years for its sound.
I wrote I Love Me in 2006 while sitting in the back of a bakkie on a gravel road on our way home from a show. At the time I sometimes played in a band with my sister. The words seemed to come through me without much thought.
I am still amazed by what I wrote then: “Proud of who I am,” “I dream big because I can,” “I love me.” Almost twenty years later, those words still resonate with me.
The song stayed behind because I felt it needed a real band. At the end of 2025 I finally let AI reimagine it. Suddenly the band I had been waiting for was no longer the thing preventing the song from becoming real.
Just before the song was produced, I added one final part. I felt that the song had become a little too focused on the self — almost too ego-driven — and that wasn't what I wanted the message to be. I wanted to acknowledge where that love ultimately comes from for me, and to give the credit back to God.
Back of a bakkie. Gravel road. Coming home from a show.
A surviving guitar beginning shows the song was still with me ten years later.
Technology finally gave the old song the musical world I had imagined.
